Britney files for divorce

Britney Spears has filed for divorce from husband Kevin Federline, according to a court petition apparently filed by the singer yesterday.

Reports claim that a divorce petition filed in Los Angeles' superior court cites "irreconcilable differences" between the couple as the reason for the split.

News of the separation comes after Spears appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman earlier this week without wearing her wedding ring.

It also comes just two months after the pop princess gave birth to the couple's second son, James Jayden, who was born on September 12th, a year after the birth of her first child, Sean Preston.

According to reports, divorce papers filed by Spears show that the wealthy singer has asked for sole custody of the two children, but is not seeking spousal support.

The date of the separation between Spears, 24, and Federline, 28, is stated as November 6th in the court documents.

The reported split between the couple follows a period of intense media speculation about their relationship, with previous reports having suggested that Spears had been increasingly left at home holding the babies while her husband apparently neglected his fathering duties and went out partying instead.

A bizarre reality show chronicling the couple's marriage, which was screened last year, did little to quell rumours that everything was not right between Spears and Federline, who was one of the singer's former dancers until the couple secretly married in 2004.

Yet only last week Mr Spears told the Associated Press that he and his wife had a "love-at-first-sight-type deal" that had yet to fade.

The rapper, who has had limited success in pursuing his own music career, already has two children by his former girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson.

It also looks like being a case of oops, I did it again, in the failed marriage stakes for Spears, whose previous union with childhood sweetheart Jason Alexander was annulled just days after their spur-of-the-moment Las Vegas wedding in 2004.

Meanwhile, it was revealed on Monday that the singer, who shot to fame in 1999 with her debut single Baby One More Time, had lost her defamation case against Us Weekly.

Spears had argued that the magazine's claims that she and her husband had made a sexually explicit tape were "false and outrageous".
